Peasant Rebellions in Tokugawa Japan
This dataset records peasant rebellions in Japan during the Tokugawa era. Each row is a single event. The entries were transcribed from Aoki Kōji's Hyakushō Ikki Sōgō Nenpyō (1971). Variables include the date in the Japanese era calendar, province, district, domain, the type of event as classified by Aoki, and whether Aoki lists taxation as a motive. This dataset is the raw material behind Steele, Paik and Tanaka (2017), but it is not the replication data for that article. The article uses a domain-level cross-section for 1603-1868. This file keeps Aoki's original categories and covers all territories and years.
Please use with caution. Transcribing the chronology was labor-intensive, and despite our efforts, the data contain gaps and possible errors. We recommend consulting the original volume for your analyses.
